◆ Since magnetic field lines are the path taken by a hypothetical North Pole when it is in range of a magnetic field of a magnet, it is clear that the direction of hypothetical North Pole would be from North Pole to South Pole of a magnet not even outside the magnet but inside the magnet too, because North Pole of magnet will repel the hypothetical North Pole inside and outside the magnet and would be attracted by the South Pole of the magnet.

◆Another reason-it is occur due to the electromagnetism of earth - because the south pole of earth magnet is in the geographically north direction and north pole is in geographically south direction.

Answer:

This was done many centuries ago because the earth has a magnetic fieldand some materials were found on the earth, which are permanent magnets. The compass was invented and the earth's poles were named. In magnetssuch as bar magnets the magnetic field lines are starting from North pole and ends in south pole.

hope it helps
