Why ammeter is not connected in parallel combination?

as ammeter is a low resistance device and when it is connected in parallel combination a large amount of current can flow through it which can cause damage to ammeter and appliances connected in circuit and ammeter can burn out . so it should be always connected in series so as to make sure that less amount of current flows through it
