an ammeter is low resistance instrument. when ammeter is connected in series the resistance of circuit approximately remain the same, hence the amount of current does not decrease.
A voltmeter is high resistance instrument.
when an voltmeter connected in parallel, a small amount of current flows through it,hence the amount of current of the circuit is remain same.
therefore an ammeter is always connected in series and voltmeter is always connected in parallel. .
