it is always connected in series to the circuit through which current is to be measured

Ammeter is connected in series so that it could measure the cureent flowing through the wire. An ammeter has very less resistence and if connected in parallel, the current would divide and only the current passing through the 1st parallel would be measured.

Hope it helps!!!!!
