Explanation:

According to the Brønsted-Lowry acid base-theory, an acid is a proton (hydrogen ion,   H  + ) donator, and a base is a proton(hydrogen ion,H +  ) donator, and a base is a proton (hydrogen ion,  H  +  ) acceptor.

NH 3 ( aq ) +  H 2 O(l)  ↔  NH  +  4 ( aq )  +  OH −

Ammonia is the hydrogen ion acceptor, and is therefore a base, and water is the hydrogen ion donor, and is therefore an acid.
