Ammonia is usually prepared in the lab by heating a mixture of dry slaked lime and ammonium chloride.

Ammonium nitrate is not used because it decomposes to nitrous oxide (laughing gas) on heating.

NH4NO3 = N2O + H2O

Ammonium nitrate also forms explosive mixtures with certain other chemicals. It is not a very safe substance to handle.
