An army tank has a huge mass. If this mass is distributed among tyres, then the tyres as well the ground will receive a large amount of pressure. Due to this, the tank might stop moving or can come crashing to the ground.
Now, we know that pressure is given as force per area. Hence, if the area is increased, then the pressure on the ground can be reduced.
In order to do this the tanks are rested upon a continuous chain. This chain increases the area of contact of tank with the ground thereby reducing the pressure it exerts.
