Why an earthworm is called a detritivore?

Detritivore help in the composting of the organic compounds or simply the breakdown of it. As the earthworm helps in vermicomposting the process also helps the farmers to grow fertile soils as in the process they chemical burn down organic compounds or decomposing matter.
