An element that is not normally radioactive, such as silver, may be irradiated with neutrons to produce unstable nuclei of the same (but now heavier) element, which is radioactive and will lose weight, in an attempt to become stable, by ejecting some other particle. The neutrons must have the correct energies to be absorbed, however.

Naturally, an element is radioactive if it has an unstable nucleus.
