Why an object when thrown upwards reaches a certain height and then falls downward?

When a particle is throwing upward that means it is going opposite direction of the gravitational force. That's why it will decelerate continuously and reach a certain height.it will be its highest point and at this highest point its speed will be zero.and again for the gravitational force it will be coming towards the gravitatiotal force that means it will come downward
