an oxide ion has -2 as charge because oxygen atom gains two electrons to complete it's octet and become stable.

Since, it gains 2 electrons it has a negative charge

oxygen contains 6 electron in its last shell so it needs only 2 electron to complete its octet .

Oxygen takes 2 electron from another atom and form oxide hence it has -2 charge
