Anaerobic respiration cannot continue for long in higher organisms because of
(i) low yield of energy,
(ii) decomposition of large amount of substrates, so that little is left for growth and repairs,
(iii) toxic effect of end products in higher concentration,
(iv) inhibition of a number of physiological process linked with aerobic respiration

The anaerobic respiration is not suitable for higher organisms because in this respiration process the less energy or 2 ATP is produced as an end product which is not sufficient for the higher organisms.
Explanation:
There is a toxic effect in the end product in a higher concentration and also there is a decomposition of the large quantity of the substrates so no proper quantity is left for the development and the repair of the body.
