Man made lakes are usually constructed by building a dam across A deep river valley which then backs up with water flooding several square miles of land . This is to allow the storage of drinking water and quite often as a source of hydro electric power by runnnig the water through turbines . In the uk we call them resovoirs and generally for the storage of drinking water only . They are also used as leisure facilities for the likes of canoeing, wind surfing , sailing and angling . There are many large dams or man made lakes if you prefer around the world, examples are the likes of the Hoover in the US or the Aswan in Egypt . Here ancient monuments were physicly moved to a new position above the water level so as to preserve them . Much archaeological evidence has been lost beneath man made lakes world wide as has been land to grow food and even in the uk hamlets and small villages lay beneath the water of some .
