Why anode rays are called canal rays?

Thomson concluded that cathode rays were light, fast moving, negative particles, that were a part of an atom. Thomson called the cathode ray particle, the ELECTRON. They are produced by the negative electrode, or cathode, in an evacuated tube, and travel towards the anode.
