why antibiotics do not work against diseases caused by viruses?

Antibiotic are used to treat diseases caused by bacteria.They treat the disease by disrupting the cell wall of bacteria.But the external covering of virus is similar to a cell membrane thus difficult to disrupt it of the antibiotics.
Thus they cannot act against the virus.
