Designing safe and effective antiviral drugs is difficult, because viruses use the host's cells to replicate. This makes it difficult to find targets for the drug that would interfere with the virus without also harming the host organism's cells.

Antiviral medicines are not common because scientists are aware of lifecycle of bacteria and fungi but not of virus because they are living as well as non living so we are not aware of their life cycle and hence there are very less medicines for viral diseases.
