Firstly there were two broad social groups in “The Merchant of Venice”, the Christians and jews. Antonio was an ideal Christian; noble and being charitable. He was helpful to almost everyone except the rival moneylender Shylock, who was a Jew. In Shylock’s perspective, Antonio is a successful merchant, who is a hinderance to Shylock’s money lending business. So basically Antonio is not or does not become bad in part 2. As Bassanio mentions, “He is the noblest man”.
