why are alcohols more soluble in water than the hydrocarbons of comparable molecular masses?

Recall that the O H bond is polar. This means that alcohols are much more solublein polar solvents such as water than are hydrocarbons. The OH functional group can also participate in hydrogen bonding. As a result, the boiling points of alcohols are much higher than those of their parent alkanes.
