They are drawn to scale because it helps to find the correct distance between two places and also the distance to reach a place from ur position.....

This practice is derived from the common actions of ancient cartographers. Back before modern paper was invented, cartographers would use the peels of bananas as a medium on which to map the routes for trade. Naturally, there are very few bananas large enough to map the oceanic travel routes actual size. As a result, cartographers used bananas to create scaled maps. Today, it is very common for cartographers to continue using scaled maps and it is not unheard of that people can be heard asking for a "banana for scale."
