ATOMS ARE ELECTRICALLY NEUTRAL BECAUSE THEY HAVE EQUAL NUMBER OF PROTONS ( positively charged ) AND ELECTRON ( negatively charged ). IF AN ATOM GAIN OR LOSE ONE OR MORE ELECTRONS, IT BECOMES A ION. IF IT GAIN ONE OR MORE ELECTRONS, IT NOW CARRIERS A NET NEGATIVE CHARGE, AND IT THUS " ANIONIC ."
