Why are bones in Cranium fused but those in the vertebral column separated by cartilage?

The bones in skull or cranium are fused to provide solid structure with minimal movement to protect brain. They have sutures adhesion. While in vertebral column, backbone requires flexibility to bend or move sidewards. To reduce friction between two discs we have hyaline cartilage.
