Why are books referred to as a man’s best companion? Which is your favorite book and why?

Books are referred to as man's best companion.
In today's world, the "Smart Phone" is considered the society's paradigm of "man's best companion". But things were different back then. Books, all genres alike, helped man to achieve marvelous feats and sear their mark in history. Books once served as the core of knowledge and helped people transcend through dark times without much trouble.
I've been through an ordeal last October and GRRM's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' paved a way for me through it.
I consider all the books of GRRM's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' as my favorite.
I end by quoting a character from the 'A Game of Thrones': "A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge"
