All grains (eg: rice, wheat) contain two major parts to them, the endosperm and the embryonic region.
The Bran includes all the parts that cover the endosperm and the embryonic region, such as the aleurone layer, the testa, etc.
The bran is removed during the milling process as it increases the shelf life of the flour. Also, it makes the flour more quickly and easily digestible.
