Stupas The stupa, which traces its origin to the pre-Buddhist burial mounds, was a hemispherical dome or mound built over a sacred relic, either of Buddha himself or a sanctified monk or a sacred text. ... This better known stupa at Sanchi was enlarged during this period.

Stupa- Stupa, Buddhist commemorative monument usually housing sacred relics associated with the Buddha or other saintly persons.

Buddhist stupas were originally built to house the earthly remains of the historical Buddha and his associates. They contain remains of Budhha or other associate of him.

Chaitya- Its a prayer hall of Buddhist monks to pray here. At one end of Chaitya, mostly Budhha statue or any other associate used be present there.

Hence,they are sacred.
