Important Buffers in Living Systems. Abuffer is a chemical substance that helps maintain a relatively constant pH in a solution, even in the face of addition of acids or bases. Buffering is important in livingsystems as a means of maintaining a fairly constant internal environment, also known as homeostasis

Living systems are very sensitive to pH changes. Your blood, for example, has a pH of about 7.4. A rise or drop greater than 0.05 would require hospitalization (alkalosis and acidosis respectively). A rise or drop of 0.2 is fatal. If it weren't for the blood-buffering system, then swings this high and greater would be easy to accomplish and maintaining a living system would essentially be impossible.
