Why are building foundations have a large horizontal area of contact with the ground?

To decrease the pressure becoz as the area of cross section increases the pressure decreases .

this is because the center of gravity tends to be close to the ground because of more presence of mass near the ground which is why it gains stability. otherwise with a narrow base the structure can fall anytime , even due to the force produced by wind blowing
