Most of the carbon compounds give a lot of heat and light when burnt in air. Saturated hydrocarbons burn with a clean flame and no smoke is produced. The carbon compounds, used as a fuel, have high calorific values. Therefore, carbon and its compounds are used as fuels for most applications.

Carbon and it’s compounds are used as fuels by reacting with the oxygen in air to provide heat (exothermic reaction). These compounds are readily available as gases or liquids and are relatively inexpensive and easy to use. Natural gas which is found in nature is a common fuel. Natural gas is methane, CH4. Pentane is common on a small scale. It is sold in liquid form and comes in a pressurized container. It vaporizes readily and is used as a gas. Refined petroleum is used as a fuel for automobiles, aircraft and ships.
