Answer:

Carbon itself is a good combustible substance. Carbon combines with hydrogen and oxygen to form organic compounds which are also good combustible substances ( except CO2 as it is a extinguisher ). You may know that hydrogen and oxygen itself burns by releasing lot of energy but as storing them is difficult, they cant be regularly used. in case of carbon and it's compounds, they are easy to store and use moreover there are many carbon compounds which contains oxygen, hydrogen and carbon making it  more efficient and energy producing. You may take examples of compounds such as ethanol, ethane, methane, acetylene gas and many more. Secondly, they on combustion generally produce CO2 and H2O which are not very harmful for the environment and third is that they can be easily produced and obtained by our environment moreover many compounds can easily be made by us. For this reason, carbon and it's compounds are uses as fuels for most application. If any doubts, you can ask me.
