caterpillar tracks used in battle tank instead of tyres SO THAT THE HEAVY WEIGHT OF THE BATTLE tanks are equally distributed on the soft ground if the battle tanks moved on tyres it has chances of sinking of land due to pressure ....the caterpillar tracks also hels the battle tank to go to difficult places

Heavy tanks have broad chains called Caterpillar tracks with considerably increase the area of contact .the pressure on the tracks is therefore much less than if it had wheel. this prevent it from singing in the terrain such as marshy land where wheeled vehicles of the same weight would sink
