why are cations drawn towards cathode and a nions towards anode?

Because cations are negatively charged particles and their attracted towards a positive electrode that is anode while anions and positively charged particles and I attracted towards the negative electrode that is cathode.

A cathode is a negatively charged electrode. So it attracts cations which are positively charged.
Similarly, the anode is a positively charged electrode. So it attracts negatively charged particles called anions.
