why are cells generally of a small size

if the cell grows big and crosses a certain limit of size then materials essential for the cell to survive cannot cross the membrane fast as there will be an increased cellular volume.surface area to the volume ratio decreases as the cell gets larger.

cell are small because they need to be able to get the nutrition and in all the waste out quickly cell are so little so they are miximzed their ratio of surface area of volume..
