Answer: You need to balance equations because in a chemical equation, atoms cannot be created or destroyed in a chemical reaction. Chemical equations actually involve breaking and making of bonds between atoms to produce new substances.

That is why the total mass of elements present in products of a chemical reaction has to be equal to the total mass of elements present in the reactants.

Explanation: The number of atoms of each element remains the same, before and after a chemical reaction.

So if you don't balance equations you won't get marks. Simple.

Example: 3Fe+ 4H2O------ Fe3O4 + 4H2

Important note: to be able to balance equations properly without ever making mistakes, you need to learn the valency. And of course you need lots of practice before the exam or else expect to forget some.
