Usually you have to have a point of reference, a child never exposed to trains will figure it out, but may not gravitate to trains.

But if a kid does get into trains, there are a few reasons

Trains are traditional vehicular toys. They move and roll. There is a big chance they link together, meaning your basic toy has interaction to make a more complex structure.

Watching a train move on a track is amazing. The train is under your command because of the structure of the track. The track may have side tracks that you can manipulate. If you need a comparison to cars, this beats wheeling your car very fast.
