the cocoons are put on steam ( hot boling watter ) to stoften thecocoons upper layer and kill the larvae and can be stored as for morethan 10days

Ans. If the silk worm is allowed to complete its growth to the full term inside the cocoon, it emerges out as a silk moth. At that time, it breaks open the cocoon and flies out. If such a thing happens the entire silk thread is broken down to tiny and separate pieces. Such thread is not useful to make a silk fibre and then convert it into silk cloth. It can cause financial loss to sericulture's owner. In order to prevent this loss the silk worm is killed by dipping the cocoons in hot, boiling water. It is not allowed to transform from pupa to adult stage. Moreover, the hot water loosens the thread and obtaining a silk fibre becomes easier.
