Concave and convex mirrors are called spherical mirrors because a spherical mirror is made by taking a thin part of a hollow sphere of glass or any polished metal.

Explanation:

Spherical mirror:

  • One side of the spherical mirror is well polished and reflecting, and the other side of the spherical mirror is opaque.
  • The reflecting surface of these mirrors may be curved inwards or outwards.

Spherical mirrors are of 2 types:

Concave mirror:

In a concave mirror reflecting surface is curved inwards, i.e., faces towards the centre of the sphere.

Convex mirror:

In a Convex mirror reflecting surface is curved outwards, i.e., faces away from the centre of the sphere.

Uses of a concave mirror:

  • Big-sized concave mirrors are used to focus solar energy on an object to be heated in solar cookers, solar furnaces, etc.
  • They are used as reflectors in car headlights, searchlights, torches, etc.
  • They can be used as shaving mirrors and make-up mirrors.
  • They are used by doctors (dentist) to see large images of teeth.

Uses of a convex mirror :

  • These mirrors are used in automobiles , i.e., buses, scooters, cars, trucks, etc., as a rear-view mirror to give a very large area to view the rear traffic than a plane mirror of equal size.
