Concentrations of toxins are higher in polar regions than in zooplankton because of their role in ecosystem. zooplankton are tiny sea creatures that don't consume a lot of biomass. This means they can only ingest small amount of possible toxins. They also serve as one of the lowest levels of a food chain. With each level up in the food chain the concentration of toxins increases; this is called biomagnification.

Because their concentrations in polar bears are surprisingly high because the toxins increase in concentration 34- fold, they also travel from plankton to fish to seals to polar bears.
