Any law or policy introduced by the parliament which undermines the "basic structure of the constitution" cannot be passed and will be considered null. This is done to protect the rights of people such as the right to practice the "religion" of their choice. If the constitutional principles can be altered then the government can impose its will on the citizens and create a feeling of instability among the masses.
