Cotyledons are the embryonic part of the seeds of flowering plant which upon germination forms the first green leaf and help in the photosynthesis.

well...they r the portion of embryo within a seed.they are imp for a seed since it contains stored food reserves which help a plant initially when it grows.becoz of cotyledons only we classified flowering plants as monocots and dicots...they form the first leaves in a baby plant
