Why are covalent compounds poor conductors of electricity when dissolved in water?

Covalent compounds are made by sharing of electrons not by actual transfer of electrons (case of ionic compounds)…thus covalent compounds cannot dissociate into ions when dissolved in water. And since ions are the reason for conduction of current and there are no ions in covalent compounds…they are poor conductors.
