because covalent bonds are formed by sharing of electrons..they don't have a free electron that is required for electricity transfer(electricity is the flow of free electrons!) thus they re bad conductors.. but ionic compounds are good conductor because of the same reason...

water when distilled does not conducts any electricity or etc .it only conducts when their are any kinds of salts or imparities in it i.e when their are ions present in it
