Hello Aruneshwar!!

That is an interesting question!!
So you must be wondering why dams are made broader at the base and relatively narrow at the top, right?

Well then, the answer is very simple!
Where is the pressure of the bottom maximum? At the bottom right?
So, the dams are made broader at the base than at the top to withstand the pressure of the water..So now you understand why the dams have to be thickest at the base right?
Now let us analyse the same question in this way:
We all know that Pressure is inversely proportional to the surface area right?

Pressure=Force/Area
 Now if the Surface area is more (i.e. is the base is broader) then the pressure will be relatively less!
That is why we have got a broader base in the dams..

Hope that completely clears your doubt friend?!

Answer:

The reason is that the pressure exerted by a liquid increases with its depth. Thus, as the depth increases, more and more pressure is exerted by water on the wall of the dam. A thicker wall is required to withstand greater pressure, therefore, the thickness of the dam increases towards the bottom
