The reason is that the pressure increases as we go deeper and deeper into the water. So, the pressure is greatest at the bottomof the water. So, to withstand the pressure, dams are made broader at the bottom.

Dams are thicker at its base than at the top beacuse pressure of water is higher near the bade of dam than at its top.
If the base is thin the pressure applied by Dam's water will broke it down and make it to flow with it.
