North, South, East, and West are the four main "cardinal" directions. On a map, North is at the top, South at the bottom, West to the left, and East to the right. Every map has a Map Scale which relates distance on the map to the world. For example, one inch equals one mile.

Maps, which is a representation of geographical features theoretically been approached from any direction on a spherical globe. Direction or orientation helps us to have a bearing or familiarity with the shapes of land, water and other georgaphic features. For example if you were to stand on north pole and look down the world map may look unfamiliar with the south pole up. We are usually seeing with north pole up. So you have a sense of what is on your right and left.

So when you have one direction established in a map it helps you to figure out what is on your left , right , top or bottom.
