Cherrapunji is located in the state of Meghalaya.

Cherrapunji receives about 8000mm-9000mm on an average per annum.

Though it receives heavy rainfall, drought conditions prevails in Cherrapunji because of the following reasons -

  • Cherrapunji is a mountainous area. As a result, the rain water drains downwards resulting in soil erosion. The top soil gets removed making the ground less fertile.
  • The water can be stored if we constructed reservoirs or dams but the rugged topography doesn't support the construction of any dam or reservoir.
  • Lack of awareness to the people. Awareness must be created to the people regarding the rainwater harvesting system. People must be educated to collect and use water efficiently.

hope this helps you.......
