Why are electric field lines perpendicular to conductor?

A second characteristic of conductorsat electrostatic equilibrium is that theelectric field upon the surface of theconductor is directed entirelyperpendicular to the surface. There cannot be a component of electric field (or electric force) that is parallel to the surface.
