It is because electromagnets can be turned off and can be used to dump iron elsewhere but we cannot so the same with normal magnets.

because ELECTROMAGNETS are very powerful magnets which have large field intensity which helps to segregate iron objects from scrape material . so, they used rather than normal magnets in cranes
