Because the equator is closer to the sun. ... and the sun's rays hit the earth's surface at a higher angle at the equator. and because the sun is always directly overhead at the equator.

equatorial regions are warm because it faces the sun directetly and this because the inclination of the Earth’s axis....and this digram of of global wind patterns might help you more in undersanding the wind types in those regions
