Fossil fuels are classified as non-renewable resources because:
- Fossil fuels are naturally occurring materials containing hydrocarbons that are found within the earth's crust.
- It is the decomposed remains of plants and animals.
- But this decomposition takes millions of years.
- When the dead plants and animals get buried deep inside the earth, it gets exposed to very high temperature and pressure.
- They slowly break down and get transformed into materials with large amounts of energy stored in them.
- These are the fossil fuels that are extracted from the earth's crust and used by humans.
- Since this whole conversion process takes millions of years and the rate at which humans consume them is very high (uses them up in a few years), fossil fuels are classified as non-renewable resources.
