FOSSILS ARE IMPORTANT FOR US FOR SEVERAL REASONS. THEY ARE THE BASIS FOR THE ORGANIZATION OF THE GEOLOGIC TIME TABLE. The appearance and disappearance of organisms throughout time is how we divide up the earths history into different periods. THEY PROVIDE EVIDENCE THAT EVOLUTION IS TAKING PLACE

Two methods to determine age of fossils are
Relative method ..fossils found in deeper strata of earth's surface are older and simpler and fossils found in upper strata are new and complex
Radioactive method....the age of old fossils can be determined by calculating ratio of radioactive lead and non radioactive uranium.the age of new fossils can be determined by calculating amount of carbon 14 left in the fossils.
Fossils help to draw evolutionary history between different species.for eg a fossil archeopteryx is a connecting link between birds and reptiles.
