Saprophytes are the organisms which feed on dead and decaying matter to obtain the nutrition.

Fungi is heterotrophic and more precisely saprophytic as it obtains its nourishment and satisfies its food need from dead and decaying matter.

Hope it helps ya:)

  • Fungi are called Saprophytic because they decompose non - living organic matter.

  • They are important agents in soil mineralization and carbon - cycling.

  • They produce enzymes which allows them to decompose cellulose, hemicellulose, and pectin.

  • Some wood decaying fungi can also decomposed lignin.

  • Most fungi are saprophytic and not pathogenic to plants, animals and humans.

  • A relative few fungal species are phytopathogenic which cause diseases like infections, allergies in humans and produce toxins which affect plants, animals and humans too.

  • Examples - Cheese Mold, and Yeast.

  • Saprozoites - Which happens to fungal and bacterial saprotrophs ie. to the animal saprotrophs are known as saprozoites.
